Synopsis
Over 800,000 Australians live with depression each year and one in five people will experience depression at some stage in their life. While depression is recognised as a common and growing illness due to the stress of our everyday, fast paced lifestyles, the use of alternative therapies, in particular - acupuncture as a treatment is still widely unknown.

This seminar will explore the types of ailments and conditions that are successfully treated today, e.g. pain, digestive disorders and gynaecological and infertility problems to name a few. It will examine how acupuncture is currently practised, what you can expect from an acupuncture treatment and the basic mechanism of acupuncture.

The College of Traditional Chinese Medicine at UTS also engages in a number of research trials and will report on the success of a recent trial of acupuncture for the treatment of depression.

Synopsis
Making the average home both energy efficient and more pleasant to live in is getting a lot easier with advances in green nanotechnology. This seminar will explain what “green nanotechnology” is and how it is beginning to impact on everyday materials and systems in the home. Walls, windows, roofs, skylights, lighting, insulation, paints, air conditioning and refrigeration systems, fabrics, entertainment, home safety and security, water and gardens, energy sources, and overall design will all be impacted and improved. What is exciting is that most of these technologies can be produced in commodity volumes which mean low cost.

This clever and safe science can be used in existing structures and also enables fascinating new design options. The goal is to co-exist, restore and live harmoniously with the natural world, without causing serious decline in our standards of living.
