What is the UAI?

For last years TCM UAI, go to www.uac.edu.au

How much does the course cost?

The Bachelor of TCM is currently a fully HECS funded course at band 2. This may from year to year. For current costs visit the HECS website www.hecs.gov.au.

How do I apply for the Undergraduate TCM course?

All applications must be lodged through the Universities Admission Centre (UAC). UAC application can be purchased from newsagents during August. Alternately, application forms may be downloaded from the UAC website www.uac.edu.au. Applications must be lodged during September (the exact date is set by UAC annually). There is a second round of late applications that close 31 October. Late applications beyond 31 October are not accepted for the TCM course due to high demand for the course.

Non current school leavers (CSLX) MUST submit a personal statement in addition to their UAC application. Guidelines and cover sheets for the personal statement can be found at www.uts.edu.au/study/undergrad.html.

Can I apply or start the course in second semester?

There is no mid-year intake for TCM. All application must be received by 31 October each year or as set by UAC from time to time.

I’ve missed the application date for the undergraduate course – what can I do?

There are only two rounds of applications for the TCM undergraduate course. The first round normally closes at the end of September. The second round closes by 31 October. Non current school leavers must submit personal statements by 31 October. Although UAC guidelines state that late applications are accepted until December with lodgement of the appropriate late application fee, this DOES NOT apply to the TCM course. The TCM course is competitive and applications close with the first round of late applications on 31 October.

Should I study specific subjects in the HSC to be selected for the TCM course?

No. Selection into the course is based on UAI.

Should I take the chemistry or physics bridging course before enrolling in TCM?

This may be advantageous if you have not undertaken any science subjects in the past, though not required. All of the chemistry and other basic sciences are taught within the health sciences for TCM subjects from a beginners level to the level required to satisfactorily understand the material.

Do I need to speak or understand the Chinese language?

No, you are not required to speak or understand the Chinese language. All course material is delivered in English. Some Chinese characters and terminology are introduced into the course material, but at a basic level. You may find it helpful or of personal interest to further your studies in Chinese language. UTS does offer a double degree in TCM/International Studies. Students who maintain a credit average can elect to enrol in the double degree program at the end of their second year. The Bachelor of Arts in International Studies has a major in Chinese Language and Culture and includes a one-year, in China, training program concentrating on language studies. A minor component of TCM hospital training is also included.

I am an international student – how do I apply and what are the course fees?

International students do not apply through UAC, unless they are completing the HSC in New South Wales. International students should go directly to the following website www.uts.edu.au/international/index.html. All information regarding application procedures and course fees are available from the UTS International Office.

I am applying as a New Zealand citizen – are the procedures different?

New Zealand citizens are treated as international students. There are some slight variations in relation to HECS fees. This information can be obtained from the UTS International Office. All applications should be made via the International Office.

How do I apply as a non-award student?

In certain circumstances, you may wish to apply to complete a number of subjects on a non-award basis. This means that the individual will complete all subject assessments and participate in all subject activities. They will receive a result for the subject, but will not receive an award or testamur on completion. If you subsequently apply to the TCM course and are accepted, you may seek exemption from those non-award subjects that you have passed. Completion of non-award subjects will NOT guarantee a successful subsequent application to the TCM course. It does, however, stand your application in good stead, particularly if you have performed well within the subject. All non-award subjects are full fee paying. Fees are based on the number of credit points the subject is worth. Fees and application forms for non-award study can be downloaded from www.uts.edu.au/study/fees.html#fees.

I don’t wish to enrol as a non-award student. Are there subjects I can do in another course and use for RPL in a later application?

TCM subjects are highly specialised and the structure of the UTS TCM subjects often makes RPL a difficult process. Students enrolled in other course may have options to study Western medical sciences and then seek RPL. Again, there are difficulties here as the health sciences for TCM have been specially developed by UTS and follow a non-conventional structure. If you wish to study Western health sciences in an attempt to later gain RPL for these subjects, you should first contact Jennifer.Wyndham@uts.edu.au or David.vanReyk@uts.edu.au.
