Why chemistry and forensic science at UTS

We ask the experts

We know what industry seeks and expects from our graduates because we ask.

The School of Chemistry and Forensic Science regularly reviews its courses with industry advisory committees to ensure programs are industry-relevant, practical and have the right balance of theory and practice. The courses are regularly reviewed to ensure currency and relevance to industrial and commercial practice.

Professional relevance of programs is further assured as the School maintains strong links with industry through its academic staff who undertake appropriate research and consulting activities through the UTS Centre for Forensic Science and the research facility in Chemical Technologies.

We’re recognized

Graduates from the programs offered by the School of Chemistry and Forensic Science are eligible for membership with the Royal Australian Chemical Institute (RACI) and the Australian and New Zealand Forensic Science Society (ANZFSS).

Graduates from our Bachelors and Postgraduate programs discover that they have the opportunity to work in a wide range of international locations because our professional qualifications are widely recognised and respected.

According to the Australian Graduate Survey results for the period October 2007 to April 2008, of UTS Science graduates available for full-time employment, 72% find a job in the first three months after completing their studies with an average salary of $46,893.

In the same survey, the average percentage employment rate for graduates who have completed UTS Science postgraduate programs was 100% with an average salary of $72,644.

We offer global opportunities

You can combine UTS: Science’s Bachelor of Science degree majoring in Chemistry with a degree from other UTS study areas such as international studies, business, law and engineering.

This series of innovative combined degrees give you the chance to specialize in an area that interests you and enhances your career paths in the commercial world, which will help you break new grounds and make you more marketable in the employment market. By combining it with another specialization you create another dimension to your career path. With the international studies component, you will spend a year overseas and experience the world.

For more details on combined degrees, see UTS: Science courses.

We provide extra support to you

UTS: Science runs three learning centres in chemistry, physics and mathematics to support UTS students in their studies.

The School of Chemistry and Forensic Science run the "Chemistry Learning Centre". This is a drop-in learning centre staffed by the School’s academics. Students from all UTS study areas can get help with introductory subjects in chemistry, materials and forensic sciences.

Although the emphasis is on the provision of help for first year subjects, assistance can sometimes be provided for later year subjects.

Chemistry Learning Centre has a range of resources to support the study of chemistry by undergraduate students from the following study areas, namely Science, Nursing, Midwifery and Health, Engineering and Business.

For more information, see UTS Science Student Learning Centre.

We conduct innovative research

Innovative and industry-relevant research is undertaken within the School of Chemistry and Forensic Science, expanding both the academic and professional knowledge of both applied chemistry and forensic sciences.

We have a strong record of research and development; essential to facilitating quality postgraduate research programs and encourages research that engages the interest of industry and community partners.

Our research focuses on applied and practical chemistry and forensic science to bring about benefits to the community and industry, which is why CFS collaborates closely with industry such as the Australian Federal Police, government and defence agencies through its research entity – UTS Centre for Forensic Science.

Large proportions of the research members in UTS Centre for Forensic Science are the School of Chemistry and Forensic Science’s academics.
