As of the 1st May 2006, the Department of Cell and Molecular Biology and the Department of Health Sciences have amalgamated as the Department of Medical and Molecular Biosciences.

The Department is located with the University's City Campus:

    Level 6, Building 4, corner of Harris and Thomas Streets.

The Department offers undergraduate courses in Medical Science, Biomedical Science, Health Science in Traditional Chinese Medicine, Biotechnology and Forensic Biology plus several double degrees with Business, Law, Engineering and International Studies. These courses are supported by strong research activities, which provide opportunities for students to undertake postgraduate research degrees. Staff of the Department also undertake research within the Institute for the Biotechnology of Infectious [established in 2001 with expertise in the genetics, molecular biology and immunology of parasitic and bacterial pathogens], the Centre for Forensic Science [established in 2002] and the Proteomics Technology Centre of Expertise [established in 2006].

The Department aims in its undergraduate teaching to provide current, professional practical training supported by solid grounding in the underlying fundamental concepts and knowledge in the relevant disciplines. Research activity in the department aims to develop increased understanding of important medical, biotechnological and forensic problems, so as to provide improved diagnostic or therapeutic solutions. Medical and Molecular Biosciences (MMB) has teaching and research affiliations with medical, biotechnology and forensic organisations such as Royal North Shore Hospital, Westmead Hospital, Novartis, ABIC, Aquafin CRC, the Australian Sports Drug Testing Laboratory, the Australian Federal Police Labs and the Division of Analytical Laboratories.
