How to apply for a research degree in science

Local Students

If you are an Australian citizen or a permanent resident, you are required to complete the following forms:

  • Application for Admission to a Higher Research Degree & Scholarship with Stipend
  • UTS Academic Referees Report

International Students

International Students (not Australian citizens or permanent residents) should contact the International Office for an information package which includes a prospectus and an application form.

International students are required to have an International English Language Testing System (IELTS) score of 6.5 with a minimum of 6 in writing, apart from the below listed academic qualifications.

How to structure your application?

Applicants are strongly encouraged to discuss their research interests with a potential supervisor at the Faculty of Science prior to submitting their application. You can view current research and obtain staff contacts from the Faculty of Science website.

Research degree applicants in the Faculty of Science are expected to structure their applications on the following criteria.

Essential Criteria:

  • Previous qualifications: BSc, Honours or MSc degrees in a related field to the field of research in the application.
  • For PhD Applicants: Minimum Qualification - 1st Class Honours or 2nd Class Upper; or Research Masters Degree
  • For Master of Science Applicants: Minimum Qualification - BSc in related field.

Research Proposal:

  • A comprehensive proposal prepared by the applicant – preferably in consultation with a potential supervisor.
  • The Research Proposal should comprise:
    • a brief description of the topic (your research interest)
    • aims and significance and expected outcomes
    • research timeline
    • Evidence of prior research experience, including work in BSc, Hons. or MSc projects.
    • A short CV
    • Copies of academic transcripts

Desirable Criteria:

  • Supporting letters from two referees on the applicant’s ability to carry out research.
  • Evidence of academic capacity – copies of awards, prizes and etc.
  • List of publications – preferably in refereed journals.
