What is UTS Bridging Chemistry? Chemistry Bridging Course is designed to assist students that have little or no background in chemistry. It does not attempt to cover all of HSC Chemistry rather it focuses on the foundations necessary for tertiary study. UTS Bridging Chemistry is a student-friendly course which assumes no previous knowledge whatsoever. It is not intensive, and does not replace the HSC.
Who should attend? You are likely to benefit from this course if,
- you are a school leaver who have just completed Year 12 studies and have not completed Chemistry, or
- you are a mature-age or returning student following an extended period of absence and you are planning to pursue any University course which includes some first year Chemistry.
At UTS, courses with chemistry content include physical, biological, medical sciences, engineering, nursing and traditional Chinese medicine.
When? Part 1 - Monday, 2 to Friday 6 Feb 2009 from 9.30am to 4pm Part 2 - Monday, 9 to Friday 13 Feb 2009 from 9.30am to 4pm
The course runs for two weeks on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays. It is divided into two parts. Our recommendations are for Science, or Engineering students without any former training to complete both parts (1& 2). The needs of students who are pursuing Nursing or Traditional Chinese Medicine may be satisfied by Part 1 alone.
Where? UTS City Campus, Broadway - more details will be provided once you have enrolled.
How much does it cost? Course fees are $300 for both parts (8 days) or $160 for each part.
How do I enrol? To enrol please go to www.uts.conferenceonline.com.au
Registration Prior to the start of your Bridging courses: We need to complete your registration by marking off your attendance prior to the start of your first class. Please arrive 30 minutes (at 9.00am) to the Concierge Desk, Building 1, Level 4, UTS City Campus, Broadway on Monday 2 Feb 2009 (Chemistry Part 1) and 9 Feb 2009 (Chemistry Part 2).
How it is presented? Each day is a varied combination of lectures, demonstrations, tutorials, and hands-on activities including laboratory experiments and problem-solving sessions. It is a UTS condition of entering laboratory that you must wear covered shoes at all times; bare feet, thongs and sandals are not allowed in laboratories.
What is provided? Students will be provided with course lecture notes.
What topics are covered? Below is a brief summary of the course:
Part 1
- 9 hrs of lectures/demonstrations
- 4 hrs of laboratory experiences
- 7 hrs of problem-solving tutorial sessions
Elements, compounds, atoms, ions, molecules; the Periodic Table; chemical reactions of ions; how electrons are arranged in atoms, ions and molecules; how atoms are held together in molecules; how molecules attract each other; what makes a substance a solid, liquid or gas.
Part 2
- 8 hrs of lectures/demonstrations
- 4 hrs of laboratory experiences
- 8 hrs of problem-solving tutorial sessions
Working in amounts: grams and moles; how much reacts? working in volumes of solution; chemical energy; factors affecting reaction rates; gases; chemical equilibrium; acids and bases, pH.
Is there an exam at the end? No. UTS Bridging Chemistry is designed to offer you the opportunity to prepare yourself for tertiary study involving Chemistry without putting you under pressure to develop understanding in a limited time. You will receive a certificate of attendance for completing part 1 or part 2.
