The Faculty of Science is committed to spearheading innovation through degree programs that are strongly linked to industry and the community. Our students undertake research that has the potential to bring about change in industry and the professions. Our goal is to see research and new knowledge applied for the benefit of all sectors.
The Faculty has a strong record of research and development, essential to facilitate quality postgraduate research programs. The Faculty wins a substantial part of the competitve grants awarded to UTS annually. Much of the Faculty's research focuses on the activities of its research institutes, centres and units. This concentration of research strengths has enabled the Faculty of improve significantly the quality of its major equipment in recent years, to the benefit of its students.

Applying for a Research Degree
A research degree requires not only high level intellectual capacity but the commitment of a substantial period of time to the research work and preparation of a thesis. Consequently, the Faculty takes great care to ensure that you have the capacity for success and have a feasible area of research. In addition, the task of matching potential students with appropriate supervisors who will enjoy working together is negotiated carefully at the outset. Finally, the resources, including specialised equipment, need to be in place before a research degree candidate can be admitted to the Faculty. Before you start compiling an application, make sure you contact the Faculty. You should establish that the expertise and facilities you will need are available before you expend time on preparing your papers. Write, call or email. Scholarships
Scholarships Without Stipend (RTS Places)
All research degree students must obtain a Research Training Scheme (RTS) place in order to gain admission. Applicants are ranked according to a point score system, and places are awarded accordingly. Students receiving an RTS place will receive a full waiver of their course fees. As there is no additional stipend, students will not receive any payment to help with their study.
Scholarships With Stipend
A scholarship with stipend provdes periodical payments to the student while they are studying, as well as a waiver of course fees. Scholarships offered in this category are the Australian Postgraduate Award (APA); the UTS Doctoral & RL Werner Scholarships; and the Faculty of Science Helix Doctoral Scholarships. Students applying for these scholarships will usually be expected to have a Class 1 Honours degree or a Research Masters (by thesis) degree.
