Position Statement
My research interests stem from a strong commitment to the conservation of biological diversity and a belief that the quality of life for all peoples is diminished for every species lost. We live in an age where anthropogenic induced extinctions far eclipse historical background level extinctions. I believe that only a vigorous commitment to conservation, both in scientific theory and practical application, will precipitate a level of change that will reverse this trend. My research interests are also significantly influenced by a lifelong love of fish and biology, partly driven by my passion as a fisherman, hiker, diver, mountain biker and lover of wild places.
Research Interests
- Conservation biology with special emphasis on aquatic ecosystems of the world and fish populations in particular
- Biology and ecology of endangered fish populations
- Conservation genetics with particular reference to the loss of genetic diversity through restocking and the role that outbreeding depression plays in the recovery of fish populations
- Measuring adaptive potential in endangered populations
- Fish biology
- Restoration ecology of aquatic ecosystems
- Design of conservation areas with special reference to connectivity and dispersal
- Exotic ichthyofauna and their impact on endemic ecosystems
