Post Doctoral Research Fellow position for a Bio-optical/Biophysics

A post doctoral position is available at the University of Technology, Sydney. The position is for 2.5 years with a flexible starting date. The post doctoral fellow shall work on a new project called Bio-optical modelling of Antarctic sea-ice photosynthesis. This work is funded by an Australian Research Council Discovery Grant (2007-2009). Co-investigators on this project are Professor A McMinn (UTas) and Professor M Kühl (U Copenhagen).

The aim of this project is to develop a mechanistic model of photoprotective and photodamage processes involved with Antarctic sea-ice. The position will require the modeler to be flexible, as the data available will be derived from a wide range of physiological estimates of sea-ice algae production and bio-physical measurements of sea-ice. We expect the modeler to be involved in all aspects of the project, from experimental design, data collection, model development and field validation. The modeler will work closely with a PhD student who will be assessing the photosynthetic control of sea-ice algae.

The work will take place within the Aquatic Photosynthesis Group at University of Technology, Sydney. Members of the group are involved in assessing the impact of human-induced change as well as climate change on ecologically important aquatic plant systems, such as microalgae growing in the Southern Ocean, on sea-ice and within corals. We are looking for an applicant with a background in biological modeling (dynamic/mechanistic) or bio-optics. Experience with photosynthesis modeling, fluorometry or sea-ice optical properties is desirable; however experience with photosynthetic pigments, algal physiology or protein biochemistry would be advantageous. The candidate should be willing to work in a team both within the immediate laboratory and with a number of national and international collaborators on this project. Travel to an Antarctic base is planned for 2008 and 2009.

Feel free to contact Peter Ralph for further information. The position will remain open until a suitable candidate is found.

Please email applications which contain CV, resume of earlier research experience and contact details of three recent referees to Peter Ralph.
