Department of Environmental Sciences (DES) is one of five Departments of the Faculty of Science, University of Technology, Sydney. The Department is located on Level 5 of Building 4, the new science building on the corner of Harris and Thomas Streets, Broadway where it has newly outfitted laboratories with excellent facilities and equipment for field work and laboratory / glasshouse experimentation.

Department’s activities in teaching, research and research consulting focus on integrated understanding of the natural and impacted environments, through the knowledge of interactions among plants and animals in aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems, and with specific emphasis on management and conservation issues.

The Department offers undergraduate Bachelor of Science programs in Environmental Biology, Environmental Forensics, Marine Biology and Urban Ecology, and majors in these areas in the general BSc and in the double degrees with Business, Law, Engineering and International Studies. Current enrolment in these programs is over 300 students. More information about the structure and content of these degrees can be found at the Environmental Sciences Courses home page. Information on enrolling can be found on the Faculty's Courses page.

The Department contributes one of the most dynamic areas of research in the Faculty of Science. It ranks in the top one third of successful ARC grant applications, has excellent cross-institutional and industry collaborative links that have provided support for staff research and stipends for postgraduate students. These external linkages are further supported by the newly established Centre of Expertise in Environments.

Most of the research is integrated with the Institute for Water and Environmental Resource Management (IWERM) that provides opportunities for transdisciplinary research both within the Faculty and across other UTS faculties.

A full range of postgraduate and Honours degrees are offered by DES with over 50 postgraduates students currently enrolled in a range of Honours, Masters and Doctoral studies. Click here for a current list of projects available.
