About environmental sciences

The School of the Environment is one of five schools within UTS: Science.

It is located on level 5 of building 4 within the UTS City Campus. Laboratories are well-equipped to support field work and to undertake meso- and molecular-scale research supporting ecology.

The School of the Environment provides teaching, research, and consulting services that unravel the interactions between plants, animals, and microorganisms in marine and terrestrial ecosystems. An understanding of these important relationships will lead to better management and a more sustainable future.

Our staff sustain undergraduate and postgraduate programs that have access to laboratories and field stations with excellent facilities and equipment.

As a foundation partner of the  Sydney Institute of Marine Science (SIMS) (opens an external site), located at Chowder Bay, Sydney Harbour, UTS students have the opportunity to study in the world-class facilities there  and to ‘rub shoulders’ with outstanding researchers.

The School of Environment offers programs in:

Environmental Biology

Undergraduate level, which focuses on foundation components of natural systems, how these systems work and how detrimental impacts can be assessed and recovered. Places strong emphasis on field trips that include Snowy Mountains, NSW outback and the Great Barrier Reef.

Environmental Forensics

Undergraduate level, which is a multidisciplinary approach combines forensic methodology with law to identify environmental impacts of chemicals on aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems and the policy and regulatory processes that help manage and protect the environment. There is a strong emphasis on field and laboratory skills.

Marine Biology

Undergraduate level, which focuses on how the marine environment works and how it can be better managed. Students gain a thorough understanding of the way plants, animals and micro-organisms function in all marine ecosystems. Field work is an exciting feature of this program and includes One Tree and Heron Islands on the Great Barrier Reef ,Sydney Harbour and East Coast and inland waterways.
