Managing your candidature

Length and Extension of Candidature

Research student candidature is counted in a measurement of time called “EFTSU” (Equivalent Full-time Student Unit). Universities receive Federal Government  funding to cover the period of EFTSU for research degree students through the Research Training Scheme (RTS). Students have a limited amount of EFTSU to complete their degree.

  • Full-time PhD student = 4 EFTSU in total (4 years or 8 years part-time)
  • Full-time MSc student = 2 EFTSU in total (2 years or 4 years part-time)

The EFTSU clock is stopped when a student goes on a period of leave of absence. The EFTSU clock is slowed if a student changes from full-time to part-time; and it speeds up if a student changes from part-time to full-time.

If a student has reached the end of their EFTSU period and is not ready to submit their thesis for examination due to reasons beyond their control, they must apply to the Faculty for an extension of candidature.

Extension of Candidature

A student who wishes to extend the period of his or her research candidature is required to seek approval from the Associate Dean Research. An extension can only be sought for reasons/circumstances that are beyond a students’ control, which have contributed to slow their progress.

An extension of the approved period of candidature will not include periods of approved leave of absence.

Where an extension of candidature means that a local student will exceed the maximum period funded period, the student may be liable for course fees for any period of time that is outside the maximum period of time normally covered by such Commonwealth support.

Maximum period of extension differs according to the level of your research degree:
Doctoral degree students:

  • one year for full-time student
  • two years for part-time student

Masters degree students:

  • one half year for both a part-time and a full-time student
