A step by step guide to applying for a research degree in UTS: Science
Step 1
Read the information on research degrees offered at UTS: Science. Check your eligibility against the admission requirements for the course. Also check the Faculty’s Selection Criteria.
Step 2
Decide on the area of research you would like to pursue and the type of project you would like to work on.Step 3
Find a suitable supervisor at UTS: Science. You can do this by using the Find a supervisor database. You can also contact the Faculty Research and Development Office for assistance.
Step 4
Discuss the proposed research project with your potential supervisor. Write a Project plan (DOC, 85kb, 2 pages) in consultation with your supervisor.
Step 5
Faculty of Science point-scoring system for scholarship applications
Applicants must read the Faculty’s Point-Scoring System (PDF, 96kB) and prepare their applications making sure that they provide all documentation addressing all categories and entries that apply.
The Faculty has a limited number of scholarships to award each year. Scholarships are awarded to highest scoring applicants.
Step 6
Complete application form and attach required documents
- Complete the appropriate UTS application form in consultation with your nominated supervisor.
- Local applicants: download UTS application form (PDF, 396kb)
- International applicants: see how to complete an application form
- Faculty of Science Project plan (DOC, 85kb, 2 pages) in consultation with your supervisor and attach this to you application
Attach all required documentation i.e. academic transcripts, CV, evidence of research experience, evidence of publications/prizes/awards, and submit your application form by the due date.
Step 7
Submit documents

Local applications must be submitted to the University Graduate School.

International applications must be submitted to UTS International. International applicants must also refer to the International Application Procedure for further information.
Your application will be sent to the Faculty of Science for approval. Necessary checks on appropriate qualifications, supervision arrangements and project details will be made, and admission to the appropriate course made accordingly.
Selection Criteria for UTS: Science Research Degrees
Research Project Plan
Applications without a research project plan will not be considered for admission.
Supervision
Applicants must contact a potential supervisor to discuss supervision of their project PRIOR to submitting their application to UTS.
All applicants must nominate a Principal Supervisor and a Co-Supervisor who are UTS: Science staff. In addition, applicants may also nominate an External Supervisor.
All supervisors must be on the Register of UTS Supervisors, or must apply to be registered. It is also Faculty's policy that Principal Supervisors must have a level of qualification equal to the degree they are supervising.
Additional supporting documentation for applications in UTS: Science
- Curriculum Vitae
- Copies of academic transcripts. These should include the GPA calculated on all undergraduate subjects, excluding Honours.
- Documentation providing evidence of full time or part time (specifying clearly what fraction of equivalent full time) employment in a professional capacity relevant to the proposed post-graduate project.
- Evidence of academic capacity, e.g.. copies of prestigious international awards and prizes, etc.
- Documentation for any justifiable career interruption
- List of publications
