Credit recognition

Students who are enrolled in UTS: Science courses and who have previously studied at another university or other recognised tertiary educational institution may be eligible for Credit recognition in the form of subject exemptions. Subject exemptions may be of two types:

  • A specific UTS subject
    • Exemptions will normally only be granted for subjects deemed equivalent to UTS subjects in time, content, treatment and conceptual development.
  • An unspecified elective in an enrolled UTS course
    • Subjects submitted for unspecified electives have to be equivalent to a semester-long UTS subject. Total prior subjects (or equivalent credit points) used for unspecified electives must be equal to UTS credit points.

The maximum amount of credit allowed by the Faculty of Science for credit recognition is one half of the total course credit point requirement for a course. Exemptions will not normally be granted for subjects taken more than five years prior to the student's first semester of study in the relevant UTS: Science Faculty course, unless there is evidence through work experience that the knowledge has remained current.

Students are required to apply for exemptions at enrolment in their first semester of study. Exemptions will only be granted in exceptional circumstances after this time. If a student wishes to request exemptions after their first semester of study they are advised to make an appointment with the Associate Dean Teaching and Learning through the Building 6 Student Centre.

Previously acquired credentialed or uncredentialed learning may only be counted once as approved Credit Recognition exemptions for any course offered by the University. Thus students should note that exemptions given in one course at UTS will not necessarily be transferred to another course at UTS after a successful internal course transfer has occurred.

Credit recognition (exemption) forms are available from the Student Admin Unit website.
