The department began in the early 1960s as a school of UTS's precursor institution, the NSW Institute of Technology (NSWIT). After many years as part of the Faculty of Mathematical and Computing Sciences (later the Faculty of Information Technology), the Department of Mathematical Sciences joined the Faculty of Science In 2002. Throughout its history the department's focus has been on
research and teaching in mathematics and its applications, particularly in areas relevant to commerce and industry,
preparing its graduates with the analytic and computational skills required for modern careers, and the abilities needed to keep their knowledge and skills at the leading edge in their professional lives.
