About the Department

The Department of Mathematical Sciences is one of five Departments in the Faculty of Science. We offer practical hands-on undergraduate  and postgraduate courses that prepare students for interesting and rewarding careers in the applications of mathematics at the cutting edge of modern commerce and industry.

The Department has leading research programs in

  • quantitative finance and risk modelling,

  • applications of statistical design to market research and the modelling of consumer choice processes,

  • the electromagnetic theory of optics as applied to optical communication and laser technology,

  • the application of operations research to transportation and industrial production.

The department began in the early 1960s as a school of UTS's precursor institution, the NSW Institute of Technology (NSWIT). After many years as part of the Faculty of Mathematical and Computing Sciences (later the Faculty of Information Technology), the Department of Mathematical Sciences joined the Faculty of Science In 2002. Throughout its history the department's focus has been on

  • research and teaching in mathematics and its applications, particularly in areas relevant to commerce and industry,

  • preparing its graduates with the analytic and computational skills required for modern careers, and the abilities needed to keep their knowledge and skills at the leading edge in their professional lives.
