Choosing Subjects and Majors

Wondering about how to choose which subjects to enrol in each semester? Each university has its own unique procedures and terminology for this process, so we’ve included a brief guide below along with answers to some frequently asked questions. More detailed information on UTS terminology and procedures can be found here on the main UTS website.

Of course it's often helpful to explore your options with someone. The primary source of advice on choosing subjects is usually your course director or academic advisor (click here for their contact details).

TERMINOLOGY

Credit points: measure the expected commitment of effort on your part in a subject. At UTS a normal full-time load is 24 credit points (typically four 6 credit point subjects) in each semester. A normal part-time load is 12 credit points (typically two 6 credit point subjects) per semester. Of course there are many individual variations.

Course requirements: specify what you have to study in order to graduate. The requirements usually specify a collection of particular subjects that are mandatory, and may also specify a range of optional components from which you must make a selection.

Course program: a suggested order in which to take the subjects in your course. The programs take into account subject prerequisites.

Choice blocks, streams, submajors and majors: collectively called sub-structures in the course, these are sets of optional components from which you must choose. The options may be a set of related subjects that have been grouped together to contribute towards a major or a submajor in a given area, or they may be a collection of elective subjects (that may be unrelated) that allow you to explore different areas of study.

FAQs ON ELECTIVE SUBJECTS

Q: Can I choose elective subjects from other Faculties?

Yes: the Bachelor of Science (Mathematics/Statistics) courses both allow a number of elective subjects. The most common electives chosen are included in choice blocks in the course structure. Other elective choices may be allowed at the discretion of the Course Director. The Bachelor of Mathematics and Finance and Bachelor of Mathematics and Computing courses each allow a more restricted range of choices from Business and Information Technology subjects respectively.

Q: Do I have to study other science subjects in the Bachelor of Science course?

No: While it is possible to choose your elective subjects from other Science disciplines in the Faculty of Science, you do not have to do so. Other frequently chosen elective subjects include those from the Faculties of Business, Law, Engineering/Information Technology and Arts.

Q: Where can I get advice on choosing my subjects?

From your Course Director.
