Dimensions and structure
The School of Mathematical Sciences offers a range of undergraduate, honours and postgraduate programs that combine the development of knowledge with the practical skills needed in the broad areas of:
- quantitative finance and risk modelling
- statistics and its applications in fields such as market research and service delivery
- mathematical physics, such as electromagnetic theory of optics as applied to optical communication
- application of operations research to transportation and industrial production
We offer specialist degrees in mathematics and statistics together with their applications in finance and IT; these degrees may be combined with a degree from other faculties, including Business, Engineering, Law or International Studies.
Employers tell us that our courses achieve the ideal balance between theoretical learning and practical experience and expertise. This means that our graduates are in great demand.
The School is proud to be part of the first doctoral training centre in Australia: in partnership with the Australian Government, UTS and four other members of the Australian Technology Network of Universities (ATN) have launched the ATN industry Doctoral Training Centre (IDTC) in Mathematics and Statistics which connects PhD students with industry and addresses the current critical shortage of industry focused highly trained researchers in mathematical sciences and related disciplines. The program contains coursework and professional development components; students spend a significant amount of their candidature working at the industry partner site.
The School offers a number of other research-based degree programs at Honours, Masters and PhD levels. Like many of UTS study areas, the School of Mathematical Sciences has a complex network of links with other schools and research areas within UTS. In particular, the School plays key roles in major UTS research strengths including the Quantitative Finance Research Centre and the Centre for Ultrahigh-bandwidth Devices for Optical Systems.
