User access and registration

UTS Staff and Student Users

If you would like to get more information or gain access to the facilities in the Microstructural Analysis Unit (MAU), in the first instance you should:

  • Send an email expressing your intention and interest to: mau@uts.edu.au
  • Next a meeting will be arranged with the MAU Director and the Professional Officer Operations to discuss your project and establish your requirements.
  • Ensure you have completed the registration form and bring it with you during the meeting:

If you haven't completed an MAU Laboratory Induction in the previous three years, you need to also arrange an MAU Induction (PDF 32kb 3 pages) with a staff member.

After this formal registration process, you will be able to use our online booking system by logging-in using your UTS Webmail user name and password. Your first booking will be with an assigned MAU staff member contact who will provide the necessary training and approve independent access.

Wording for grant application budget justification

An amount of $xxx per year (xx hours per week x 48 weeks x $50 per hour) has been requested to cover access to the research resources of the Microstructural Analysis Unit (MAU).

The MAU is a centralised large equipment facility within the Faculty of Science at UTS comprising state-of-the-art materials characterisation and microscopy tools that have been primarily funded by the ARC LIEF program. Instrumentation includes 6 SEMs, 4 SPMs, an XRD and a comprehensive array of optical and electrical measurement equipment.

The MAU is staffed by a Director and four resident professional officers whose salaries are paid by the Faculty of Science. The requested $50/hr (replace with $75/hr for Linkage) MAU access rate subsidises general consumables and large equipment running costs of the Centre. This access cost is 75% (replace with 50% for Linkage) off the current access rate charged to external users of the MAU.

Industry and External Users

Contact the MAU Director or the Professional Officer Operations to organise a booking or arrange a meeting to talk about your research needs.

Fill in the industry user registration form before your first booking, and if you require independent access to the the lab, a MAU Induction (PDF 32kb 3 pages) must be completed with a staff member.
