Facilities

The Microbial Imaging Facility (MIF) is located within PC2 laboratories which allows analysis of both Class 2 pathogens and genetically modified organism (GMOs). Cell culture and pathogen preparation rooms are also available.

  • Nikon Ti inverted epifluorescent microscope with phase contrast and DIC objectives, CCD and EMCCD cameras and live cell imaging capability (humidified environmental chamber with temperature and CO2 (control) with Perfect Focus System ™.

    Filter Cubes: mCherry (HC Red), GFP B, YFP HQ, Texas Red, Cy5.5, DAPI, UV-2A, GFP HQ, TRITC

  • Nikon A1 laser scanning confocal microscope with MadCity ultra-fast piezo Z-drive, filter and spectral detection, phase contrast and DIC objectives, galvano and resonance scanners and live cell imaging capability (humidified environmental chamber with temperature and CO2 (control) with Perfect Focus System ™.

    Lasers: 404, 488, 561, 637 nm
    Emission: blue (425-475 nm), green (500 - 550 nm), red (570-620 nm), far red (662-737 nm)

  • DeltaVision personalDV high resolution imaging system (inverted epifluorescent deconvolution microscope)

    Filter Cubes: DAPI, TRITC, FITC, Cy5

  • DeltaVision personalDV high resolution imaging system (inverted epifluorescent deconvolution microscope) fitted with a WeatherStation environmental control chamber.

  • DeltaVision OMX Blaze ™ microscope for multi-wavelength simultaneous fast structured illumination imaging or fast simultaneous multi-wavelength high resolution deconvolution live cell imaging, with heated stage.

  • Advanced computing capabilities Additional computing resources are available within the Advanced Computing Facility (ACF) of MIF. The ACF is located on the same floor as the MIF outside of the wet labs and is designed for offline image and data analysis.

    • Image analysis software: NIS Elements, Bitplane IMARIS, SIS AnalySIS, ImageJ
    • Flow Cytometry analysis software: Diva, FCAP Array, FlowJo, Modfit and CellQuest Pro
    • Other software: Adobe Photoshop, Graphpad PRISM, Accelrys MacVector
  • OptIPortal: so named for its use of optical networking, Internet protocol, computer storage, processing and visualization technologies. The goal of the OptIPortal is to enable scientists who are generating large data sets to interactively visualise, analyse and correlate their data from multiple storage sites connected to optical networks. UTS has installed 2 OptIPuters to support data intensive research and collaboration- one of these is located within the Advanced Computing Facility.
